Captain Nan Silverman-Wise currently serves as the Senior Reserve Officer for the Coast Guard Eighth District. In response to the COVID-19 world pandemic she activated as the Eighth District COVID-19 Incident Commander, redeployed as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Coast Guard-lead Joint Coordination Center facilitating Department of Health and Human Services operations, and then served as Surveillance Testing Project Manager in support of the Coast Guard’s Director of Health, Safety & Work-life.

Previously, she served as the Coast Guard Reserve Unit US Southern Command J3 Operations Directorate Department Head, in Doral, FL, responsible for leading a 100+ member Crisis Action Team during exercises and real-world crises as Chief of Operations. Prior assignments include Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Port Security Unit 308 in Kiln, MS; Executive Officer of Port Security Unit 313 in Everett, WA; Operations Officer of Port Security Unit 307 in Clearwater, FL; Senior Reserve Officer at the National Command Center in Washington, DC; Investigations Duty Officer with the Prevention Department at Sector Southeastern New England; Response Team member at Marine Safety Office Providence, RI; Group Duty Officer at Group Portland, ME; Coast Guard District One Planning Office; and Quartermaster Third Class on Governors Island, NY. She also held a commission with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and served on the NOAA Ship Whiting (1992-1994).

As a Reservist, Captain Silverman-Wise deployed in support of a variety of exercises and operations. Of interest are, to Boston following the 9/11 attacks as a member of the inaugural Homeland Security Development Branch (2001); to New York City as Liaison Officer to Coast Guard District One in support of the Operation Vigilant Guard (RNC) (2004); to New Orleans as Planning Chief in support of Hurricane Katrina rescue/relief operations (2005); to North Carolina as Boat Officer for joint Port Security Unit participation in the Naval Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) Bold Alligator exercise (2012); and to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for Joint Task Force Maritime Security Detachment mission and area familiarization (2015).

Her personal military awards include the Port Security Insignia and Boat Force Operations Insignia, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medals with the Operational Distinguishing Device, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Coast Guard Achievement and Armed Forces Reserve Mobilization medals.

Captain Silverman-Wise earned a Master of Arts in Emergency and Disaster Management from American Military University, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Management from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. In her civilian career, she is a Project Manager with SMS, Inc. for the Department of Energy, and a leadership development consultant.

Captain Silverman-Wise resides in Maryland with her husband and two beautiful stepdaughters.
